Comedian, Nathan Fielder, decided to open up his own coffee shop last weekend. However, his ideas for the branding of his coffee shop included those almost identical to Starbucks Coffee. Clearly, his view on the idea of Starbucks and its ability to take over the market so quickly is not a positive one. His coffee shop, which opened up just a few minutes east of the Hollywood Hills, has adopted the name "Dumb Starbucks Coffee".
Everything about this coffee shop is the same as Starbucks, except for the added word Dumb in front of it. Menu items are exactly the same, just all have the name dumb to go with it. The sizes of the cups are the same, and the whole look and feel of the place inside is almost identical. As far as the quality of the products goes, it's clearly not the same. This parody coffee shop has purposely created bad coffee, and is still making money from it.
One customer said she waited in line three hours for a cup of Dumb Starbucks, only to find out the coffee was grossly watered down and not very fresh. Knowing that the quality of the coffee is not the same as Starbucks, people are still waiting in line for hours to try a cup of this coffee. One other woman who was waiting in line, stated that she only wanted the cup so she could sell it on eBay. As it turns out, people were selling these "Dumb Starbucks Coffee" cups for hundreds of dollars when the shop first opened up.
According to Starbucks, they're not going to let this Dumb Starbucks stick around, "We are evaluating next steps and while we appreciate the humor, they cannot use our name, which is a protected trademark". You can imagine Starbucks frustration with this parody coffee shop, as they've worked hard to keep their branding and reputation around the world. To protect it's coffee shop, Nathan has placed a bulletin on the window stating that, “In the eyes of the law, our ‘coffee shop’ is actually an art gallery and the ‘coffee’ you’re buying is considered the art.” Nathan is known for pulling stunts like this as in the past he has "The National Dinner Tour" where he went to dinner with random people who saw his number in a Crate and Barrel catalog and gave him a call.
According to other news stories, the coffee shop has been shut down by the health board due to lacking a permit to serve coffee. What will happen next, only the judge can decide. Worst thing that will happen is he can face jail time of up to six months. In the mean time, without Dumb Starbucks around, you can continue drinking real Starbucks or go somewhere else and stay charged with Juno Power. http://junopower.com/collections/smartphone-external-batteries
